A term now used in qualitative methodology that comes from the language of literary and rhetorical theory; it means, roughly, the character of the text. Here's an assortment of definitions from Google, starting with a fairly mundane translation: "the distinctive qualities of a writer's style, including diction, attitude, sentence style, and ideas". More abstract version: "the personality or style of the writer or narrator that seems to come to life in the word. More abstract still: "the authorial presence in a poem or narrative:" and if you really like abstraction try this: "Rhetorical presence or persona of an agent or group represented as a subject." Like something really down to earch? How about: 'Who's doing the talking'" (University of Victoria Writer's Guide).
