A policy is a course of action, often embodied in legislation or codified practice, usually intended to achieve social goals, e.g., a policy of zero tolerance of weapons on school grounds. Policy analysis is the evaluation of policies, and may be done in the service of history or of legislative affairs. The former is essentially a branch of program evaluation; the second also involves predictions about the probable effects of the policy and is hence mostly based on results from the implementation of similar policies elsewhere in space or time.
