Non-profit

Most philanthropic organizations are non-profit and most are also NGOs. This does not mean they are run for benevolent reasons, since their officers may be paid enormous salaries that eat up almost all of the organization's revenue and assets; check Charitynavigator.com for details. Nor does it mean that they watch how they spend their money; the level of evaluation at many of them is anecdotal or worse; but associations of NPOs and NGOs like Interaction, with 164 member organizations, are making serious efforts to improve this situation.
