The study, or a view resulting from the study, of the methods of disciplined inquiry in fields such as science, history, and jurisprudence. Major methodological orientations still in conflict include the quantitative vs. qualitative approaches and the refinement of that sometimes put as the neo-positivist vs. the hermeneutic approaches.
