Measures

Measurement is the process-or the result of the process-of systematically assigning a quantity, or a particular degree of a quality, to something, as an indication of the extent to which it possesses or exhibits a certain property. Hence, the name of a discipline devoted to study of the ways in which this can be done, and the difficulties of doing it in practical circumstances, e.g., educational measurement is the study of testing students to determine their achievement of learning or their abilities in that regard. (The former enterprise turns out to be considerably easier than the latter.) The term 'measures' refers to the quantities or qualities to which we affix scales, and the readings we get from so doing; and is also of course the verb referring to the process of measurement.
