Hypothesis

The possibility that is being considered, e.g., in designing an experiment or in searching data for counter-examples or confirmatory cases. It is often said that the task of scientific investigation is testing hypotheses, but this is an extremely narrow view that excludes much observational astronomy and field botany, as well as most theoretical work aimed at developing new theories.
