Experiment

An investigatory technique in which circumstances are arranged artificially in order to find out what will happen in those circumstances. In an experiment, one takes care, if possible, to fix some of the circumstances at known values so as to eliminate uncertainty as to their value, and to allow as few variations as possible to occur, so that one can focus observations and measurements on the variables of interest.
