Diagnostic Assessment

One done in order to identify the type of situation, condition, or problem classification in which to locate the evaluee or evaluand. The term 'diagnostic test' is often less threatening to the subject than 'evaluation,' and is quite properly used in many educational contexts, e.g., in talking about a pre-test used to set the difficulty level for a course.
