These feelings, often elicited in the evaluator as in any investigator endowed with elements of humanity, used to be regarded as impediments to scientific objectivity that should be overcome. Today it is considered more appropriate to retain them and do whatever one can to respond appropriately to them in the situation. See also empathy.
