Black box evaluation

An evaluation of an intervention or treatment whose inner workings are unknown or not provided. This is a case of a holistic evaluation by contrast with an analytic evaluation, and is commonplace in drug evaluation where we are evaluating a drug whose operation is not yet explained or not agreed on. The evaluation is critically important as a basis for legitimating use, but will not provide and answer to the scientifically interesting question of how the drug operates to produce its effects, whether beneficial or adverse. See explanation.
