A bar is a level of performance on a dimension of merit that must be achieved if the evaluand is to be considered a viable candidate in an evaluation of alternatives, no matter how well it performs on other dimensions; in other words, and absolute requirement or absolutely necessary condition. For example, "near-native speaker fluency in colloquial Spanish" may be set as a bar on the 'Spanish language requirement' for a job dealing with complaints at a department store in a Phoenix mall; and bars in this sense must be cleared A dimension on which there is a bar is said to be barred.
