Authentic tests

Tests described in this way are said to be tests of the actual skill for which the conventional test is only an indirect measure. For example, an authentic test of a lab skill would require demonstrating that skill, by contrast with asking a number of paper and pencil questions about how to do it, what apparatus would be needed, and how to interpret results. The big problems with this approach are getting reliable scoring of such tests (let alone valid scoring), their cost, and constructing them for a wide range of tasks, especially if one is aiming to standardize the test.
