Literally, an official external review by professional accountants of the financial status of an organization. Metaphorically, an external review or evaluation of any evaluand. The literal process is by no means proof against larceny and misrepresentation, as decades of scandals have made common knowledge; but it is a serious barrier to them, and greatly increases both the risk for the criminal and the possibility of demonstrating their malfeasance.
