Assessment

This term used to refer particularly to the process of determining the extent to which learners had mastered some instructional topic, in other words student testing, but has recently been expanded in the college context to cover all uses of evaluation. This appears to be due to a desire to avoid the anxiety-provoking associations of the term 'evaluation' which might be taken to indicate some difficulty for academics in facing reality and accountability.
