The dictionary definition of analysis is the resolution or breaking up of anything complex into its various simpler elements, the opposite process to synthesis. The analytical approach to evaluation involves a first step of analysis into components, followed by evaluation of the components; another approach is 'holistic' (a.k.a. wholistic) and simply treats the whole in terms of its various aspects or dimensions, evaluating these rather than the components.
