Action research

The core notion here is the study of practice by practitioners. Much of its history has centered on teachers studying and to some extent evaluating their own teaching. However, the idea has spread very widely and there are journals devoted to it in the medical field and some sociological areas. The type of study undertaken tends to be qualitative rather than quantitative.
